Working of Antivirus Software

Computer viruses and other malicious software are identified by a special computer program called antivirus through which these malicious applications can be blocked and removed. These so called special software are a necessity for every computer system to get rid from the attacks of spywares, viruses and hackers. While developing a good antivirus it is kept in mind that it should perform efficiently. Two common functions are almost found in every antivirus program.  


The first step known as database approach is that according to the user choice scanning is done and virus, if found, is matched with the updated virus database. The user will be warned via a message or a sound signal that the antivirus program has found a virus which has matched with the viral code or definitions currently present in the virus database after which the user can repair, remove, examine or drive it to the recycle bin of the antivirus if it cannot be removed. Features may vary from different antivirus. Generally a virus is deleted as soon as it is found so that it does not accomplish itself to harm other programs or even the entire system. If a virus is found it can be send for further verification and addition in the database for updating the virus database which is generally free and can be scheduled or done manually.  
The second vital purpose of the antivirus also known as suspicious behavior approach is to uncover abnormal activities which can activate other program or software in the computer system. This approach actually protects from those viruses which are not yet added in the virus database of the antivirus. Since this approach does not give the actual result all time as it may or may not be a virus which can affect other programs, most antivirus manufacturers has discarded this approach.
